I’m always on a quest to find healthy skin care information. White tea appears to be very beneficial to protecting our skin.
In an article from Science Daily, scientists at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University have shown that ingredients in white tea are effective in boosting the immune function of skin cells and protecting them against the damaging effects of the sun.
Elma Baron, MD, Director of the Skin Study Center at UHC & CWRU says our skin is similar to how oxidation causes a car to rust. Oxidative stress of the skin causes a breakdown in cellular strength and function.
The scientists performed a study where they applied white tea extract cream to the subject’s buttocks (where sun is not ordinarily exposed to) while the other area was left unprotected and exposed both areas to artificial sunlight. They found the Langerhans cells (cells in the outer layer of the skin), which are very sensitive to damage by sunlight, were protected with the white tea extract. The scientists also found that the immune system cells were restored by the extract. The DNA damage that can happen with sun exposure was limited in the skin cells protected by the white tea extract. This study offers renewed hope in the battle against skin cancer.
